My Preventable Sharps (Needle Stick) Injury

The government must end the ‘horror’ caused to NHS nurses, midwives, healthcare assistants and other health workers at risk of bloodborne diseases from sharps injuries. Official Health and Safety Executive (HSE) figures suggest there are 85,000 sharps injuries across the NHS in the UK every year. We believe that many thousands of workers could be saved from the fear and misery of these injuries by the introduction of readily available safer needles

Terence Harris, a UNISON safety rep, attended UNISON’s Biohazard Conference on 1st June 2012. He gives a moving account of a sharps injury he received, the traumatic impact it had on his life, and how it inspired him to become a UNISON safety rep.

Well done. I work for the NHS and know that change does haeppn through complaints being made. We had issues with our Stroke Unit and massive changes were made following a number of complaints. I have encouraged a couple of friends to complain about issues they have had but who unfortunately are worried about the level of care their relatives would receive following the complaint, had they made it so unfortunately have done nothing one of these being a cancer ward Good for you
